Filtered Push Team Meeting 2012Jan03

Present:

Agenda:

  • NSF Workshop RFP (Document from Bob)

Circulated 2 page document to Jim, James, Paul. Needs comment, particularly the names of people in other disciplines we should invite, perhaps some from Harvard-Smithsonian astrophysics group. Set out why we should care about annotations, what we have put forward for annotation of data, and some goals, including identifying whether there are any different annotation issues other than covered by our proposals.

Jim: Question: Activity not intended to be exclusively science?

Bob: Correct. Perhaps social sciences.

Jim: Methods for identifying leading people to invite - ask identified. Very active group working on annotations in humantites at Harvard.

Jim: Connie in MCZ library recently attended workshop in Chicago where relevant people might have attended.

Bob: Paolo also attended.

  • Upcoming Schedule: Time change for next week pending room request.

Room request made, pending.

  • Annotations Discussion tomorrow.

Paul: Any broader issues for discussion?

Bob: Just the contact we had with the student who is working on extending annotation to social networking sorts of data, has observed that some of our proposals form metadata, would like to see formal separation of annotation data and metadata (evidence, annotator, date annotated). Her position is that these are all things which could be annotations of the annotation. Provenance, however, might be much easier if it is part of the annotation...

Lei: Namespace is important for the rules.

Bob: We do need to put rules on the table in that discussion.

Bob: Paolo is going to europe next week to engage in a discussion on reconsiling namespaces amongst annotation proposals. We do need to be a little careful in using TDWG namespaces, absent developing RDF best practices, resolution is going to be an issue. For moment, we should probably pick something and resolve it ourselves (into sourceforge).

Proposal: Host the resolvable documents, with stylesheets, on the sorrceforge web hosting, faling that on the sourceforge file download mechanism.

Proposal: Make list of things we need resolution for and those for which we need human readable resolution for.

  • Brief summary of tech progress
    • Progress on Mapper (Maureen, Lei).

Lei: Circulated email with class model for mapper, code checked in for transforming annotation to intermediate representation via applicaiton of rules.

Bob: Proposal for RDF coding of annotations: http://etaxonomy.org/mw/RDF_Coding_and_Documentation

Examine mapper in Tech meeting on Friday.

James: When to look at AppleCore. Paul: Soon.

Key issues are probably: Interplay between apple core definitions, field cardinality, and rules. For example, parsing fiels contaning pipe separated lists. Is darwin core triplet required to identify a collection object in a rule....

GBIF revisiting identifiers. Greg R. Is pushing importance of distinction between identifiers for physical obects and identifiers for digital records.

For next week:

  • Pending Tech Issues
    • Generation of annotations from Specify determinations (mid to late Jan?)
    • FilteredPush Requirements Report_on_FP_Requirements
    • API For Query and Cluster Finding
    • Tech group needs to make a decision on or set a date for decision for the query language for pub-sub for Apple Pie.
    • Tech group needs to make a decision on or set a date for decision for the domain objects supported for Apple Pie.
    • Tech group needs to decide on or set a date for decision for the scope, composition, and implementation of the "global cache."
