Reports

  • Paul
    • At Specify-Dina next generation Specify meeting in Ottawa last week.
    • Lots of work on OAD examples - fleshed out and refined a template, with Bob adopted scheme of Turtle examples for human readability with selected owl wrappers for them that import the ontologies needed to make the example individual documents sensibly viewable in Protege.
    • Refining and adding documentation to dwcFP.

Notes

FilteredPush Team Meeting 2013 Mar 13 Present: Paul, Bob, David, Maureen, Jim, Tianhong, Bertram Agenda

  • Prospective meetings, development targets, ApplePie
    • Harvard Annotation Meeting

Thur Mar 28th Harvard is having an all day annotation meeting with lots of groups on the campus. Bob was asked to give a 5 min talk. We're also invited at lunch to set up an informal demo.

The pitch might be to explain what kinds of things we're currently involved in, records of holdings; could be applied to other kinds of holdings, not just museum data

For Friday's agenda: set up for the Harvard Annotation meeting demo. Do we have a one-latop demo?

For Friday's agenda: talk with Bertram about serializations of cleaned data and provenance (and error report) coming from Kepler via MongoDB. Information about the functioning of the workflow system. System provenance. Resources consumed during workflow process. What questions do we want to answer with provenance?

For Friday's agenda: look at current state of oad and dwcfp

    • OA West coast (will pay expenses of the presenter). Looking for demonstration and higher level technical details of what works and doesn't with OA.
    • OA East coast. (essentially same presentation - two sessions for convenience).
    • Semantics in biodiversity.(opportunity to develop for publication).
    • SPNHC ( [2] ) ApplePie
    • TDWG (late October) http://www.tdwg.org/homepage-news-item/article/tdwg-2013-call-for-symposia-and-workshops/
    • CNH: meeting will include NEVP. Good to workshop to get feedback from the botanists present. In Vermont, July? ApplePie
  • Duplicate Finding
  • Embedded Kepler
    • Progress on UI in annotation processor.
    • Progress on embedded QC job.
    • Work needed on actors to interact with current FP APIs.

Tianhong: current workflow derived from Lei's with actors running Comad workflow running under kepler EJB - can launch workflow, load data, output results.

Three next steps:

  1. UI to launch workflows and view results
  2. update Kuration actor that creates annotations to use current OA/OAD FP annotation documents.
  3. Define and refine output serializations (data, provenance, errors).

Bob: Distinction in provenance: Functioning of workflow system, functioning of actor?

Bertram: May be more tightly coupled than that. Timestamps, dependencies, exectuion order/semantics all potential for inclusion.

Bob: Perhaps rephrase as what scientific questions that can be answered from examining the provenance as opposed to the workflow managent questions?

  • Knowledge/Interests implementation.
  • Annotations
    • Progress on rewriting dwFP and OAD

Paul: Have a version of OAD that includes the needed classes, object properties, and motivation instances.

Bob: Still discussing how to do query selectors.

Paul: Reorganizing, making consistent names, and adding documentation to dwcFP, need to thing through some of the implications of reorganization (datatype properties to object properties, etc), and ways that organization of dwcFP could be used (UI layout, comparison with rules, translating flat to structured darwin core etc.).

    • Rewrite of Example annotations (for paper).

Bob: Still slogging through recoding the AO examples to OA. Seeing variation in where selectors are needed or not and other implications in changes OA.

    • NewOccurrence example for NEVP

Bob and David: there's a namespace issue in the document, motivation needs examination again. Otherwise looks OK.

Paul: Lets look at tomorrow afternoon.

  • Report from Specify-Dina meeting in Ottawa

Setting groundwork for an international collaboration to develop a web based specify (building on informal collaboration that's been going on for the last year).

Maureen: We should target the web version of Specify.

Paul: Agree particularly for displaying annotations.

Non-Tech

  • Increasing Burn Rate. Update on impact of sequestration.

Jim: No current impact; nothing done w/ current awards. no cost extension approved.

  • Annotations
    • Annotation MS

Bob and Paul have been working on dwcfp, oad and the examples.

    • Task Group for Applicability Statement on OA
  • Collaborations
    • Specify/Symbiota

Nothing was said about Specify/Symbiota at the Specify collaboration meeting in Ottawa.

    • SCAN TCN - Report from call

Jim: All hands conference call last week, technical issues. Writing their annual report. Paul provided a list of FP items for the report. No specific news pertenent from FP from the meeting, we are pressing them for some info they haven't pulled together yet.

MCZ is now a PEN partner to SCAN as a southwestern ants digitization provider - thus implications for driver/annotation processor for MCZbase.

    • NEVP TCN

Patrick has framed examples, one for specimen data one for image metadata based on audubon core, has passed to Bob for comment.

Bob: Audubon core is a normative document with no serialization specified, thus there's a need for development of a serialization.

Paul: Develop a draft audubon core serialization on the line of dwcFP?

Bob, potentialy a starting place generated from the normative data model (series of calls to mediawiki templates,
