Zhimin passed his Phd defence. Dr. Wang reports that during the conference there was a presentation regarding data mining quality control. He has sent the slides to the fp mailing list. He also reports that they presented a new data mining topic called transfer.
Bob mentioned that there is a collections meta data standard called TDWG NCD (natural collections metadata) Bob thinks they have an XML schema representation of it.
BCI (Biological Collections Index) http://www.biodiversitycollectionsindex.org/static/index.html
Maureen has some ideas about connecting FP with BCI for testing.
Index Herbariorum http://sciweb.nybg.org/science2/IndexHerbariorum.asp
James reports that at the conference he attended, iPlant opportunities team, they evaluated grand challenges in the plant sciences. The capture of the data stored in collections (plant collections) for use in scientific research is a grand challenge. Supposed to be getting money in February for digitising herbaria.
He also gave a talk on FP at the Columbia meeting of the Global Plants Initiative.
Bob has mentioned that the Global Change Master Directory has said they will tolerate metadata that is or isn't machine readable: http://gcmd.nasa.gov/
We are considering ways of characterising the quality of data sets in FP. Our list is:
- Statistical analysis on field value ranges
- Profiling of the data set and making recommendations for the end-user based on their interests
Maureen will focus on the specify installation in the beginning of January.
David has some documentation on various XML platforms (including binding) to post for comment and has documentation for installing the software portion of FP available that he will post on the Wiki later today.
